Despite the government’s concession to lift the nearly 50-year emergency rule, Syrian protesters continue to fill the streets and peacefully demand an end to their country’s authoritarian system. Unfortunately, the government has also continued its own tradition of harshly cracking down and gunning down citizens participating in a peaceful sit-in. In the last few weeks, it is estimated that 200 people have been killed by the hands of their own government, simply for demanding their right to live freely.
It appears that the Arab Spring is not losing steam. I hope that the rest of the world continues to stand with Arab citizens as they rise up against injustice and undemocratic rule.
